About Me:

My name is Ed Troxell and I started MIX IT UP magazine. I have been working on this since June of last year. I realize there is a lot of magazines out there and everything is moving to the web. I feel that young adults need something new and that we will always have a need for a print magazine. My goal, to deliver a comprehensive magazine that will have a little something for everyone. Young, old, male, and female. Its time we have a real magazine.

It’s our time

Summer is finally here. Some of us will be embracing our freedom from school, now that graduation is behind us, and begin the search for our careers. Others will be enjoying the few months they have off from school before returning to classes in the fall. Either way, we are all struggling to survive the job market, given today’s economy. That is why this month we are featuring “The Essential Five Career Questions” and three entrepreneurs, Andrew Christian and Michelle and Cristina Wilson, all of whom have taken the risk to create what they dreamed of doing.

While having job security is ideal, it doesn’t really exist right now. The economy is a mess, unemployment is at an all-time high, and finishing school while trying to find a job is intimidating. That is why we, you, me, that girl sitting next to you, and that guy standing in front of you, have to create our own jobs. We have to take what we love to do and run with it. It’s time for us to create our own future. As quoted above by my first editor, Gretchen Giles from the North Bay Bohemian, “create something for yourself. You are your own brand.”

When I started working on this magazine a year ago I didn’t know that I would actually be sitting here today having published two issues. At the time it was just a creative outlet for me and kept me busy. Of course I thought, ‘what if?’ but I wasn’t sure if my dream would become a reality. As cliché as this sounds, it’s true. I remember sitting in the backyard reading my Nolo book on How to Start and Run a Newsletter or Magazine, wondering if I should pursue my idea. The next thing I knew one thing led to another and here we are.

So, take what you are good at and see where it leads you. It’s OK to be scared. Trust me, I was. But, as you continue to pursue your dreams, that scared feeling inside goes away and leaves you with a sense of accomplishment and confidence. If something doesn’t work out you end up finding something else that will. As quoted by President Barack Obama, “If you're walking down the right path and you're willing to keep walking, eventually you'll make progress.”

Life is too short to always think, ‘what if?’ Get out there and face your fears head on. It is amazing what we can accomplish in this life and now, more than ever, is the perfect time to start.
